PUASAR032 – Undertake Vertical Rescue

This course contains the skills and knowledge required to undertake vertical rescues in a range of emergency situations in natural and manmade environments. It includes a range of vertical rescue situations, preparing and responding to rescue situations, assessing rescue scenes, establishing vertical rescue systems and performing in and terminating rescues. The course is applicable to personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and associated industries.

The skills in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PUASAR032 – Undertake Vertical Rescue

Prerequisites

Participants must hold the pre-requisite unit PUASAR022 – Participate in a Rescue Operation.

Additionally, students must possess the physical capability to demonstrate the vertical rescue of a casualty from an emergency situation where there is a potential risk to life.

Course duration

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount:

  • Face-to-face: Face-to-face contact time of at least 24 hours
Assessment activities

Performance tasks:

  • Complete two different types of vertical rescue situations, techniques and locations

Documentation:

  • Completion of vertical rescue notes for report form

Theory assessment:

  • A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
Real world application

This vertical rescue course has numerous real-world applications across various industries. In the emergency services, personnel frequently need to perform rescues from heights, such as rescuing individuals from cliffs, buildings, or industrial structures. These skills are also crucial for volunteer organisations like search and rescue teams that respond to emergencies in natural environments, including rugged terrains and bushland.

In industrial sectors, such as construction, mining, and utilities, workers may be required to rescue colleagues trapped in confined spaces or elevated areas due to accidents or equipment failures. Additionally, telecommunications and wind energy industries often use vertical rescue techniques to safely retrieve workers from towers and turbines.
