In this field of work, workers are exposed to day to day activities which involve testing and maintaining response equipment. These tasks can be a common cause of injury in the workplace, and as such, understanding how to undertake these tasks safely is imperative. Without proper training, employees can make mistakes and even suffer serious injury.
This training in this course allows you to develop the skills and knowledge to undertake many facets of preparing, maintaining and testing response equipment, they will inspect equipment according to organisation’s procedures, clean equipment while safely using cleaning agents and chemicals and have an understanding on occupational health and safety policies relevant to the maintenance, servicing and testing of equipment.

PUAEQU001 – Prepare, Maintain & Test Response Equipment
Participants must have the physical capability to meet the demands of the practical skills demonstrations.
For those undertaking training related to the fire sector, the prerequisite unit PUAFIR210 – Prevent Injury is required.
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount:
- Face-to-face: Face-to-face contact time of at least 4 hours
Performance tasks:
- Inspect response equipment
- Test response equipment
- Clean, maintain and store equipment
Documentation – Completion of:
- Equipment inspection lists
- Equipment test results
- Equipment fault logs
- Equipment maintenance and cleaning log forms.
Theory assessment:
- A written exam consisting of multiple-choice question and short answer questions to be completed at the end of the training session.
In industries like emergency services, manufacturing, and construction, workers are frequently required to inspect, maintain, and test response equipment, such as firefighting gear, safety harnesses, and rescue apparatus. These tasks carry a high risk of injury, particularly when handling hazardous chemicals or heavy machinery. For example, in fire stations, workers must regularly clean and test equipment like hoses, extinguishers, and breathing apparatus to ensure readiness for emergencies, all while adhering to strict safety protocols.
Similarly, in construction or industrial settings, technicians often test fall protection gear and other safety equipment, where improper handling could lead to accidents or equipment failure. This course provides the essential training to safely perform these tasks, minimise risks, and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety policies. It equips workers with the skills to maintain equipment effectively, reducing the likelihood of injury and enhancing workplace safety.
