An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

• Visual acuity to read the gas test results directly from gas testing meters.
• Protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.
• Language, literacy and numeracy requirements – students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to gas testing, conducting a risk assessment and issuing permits, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues as well as understand the permit requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses and interpret gas test/monitoring results.

Course duration can vary for multiple reasons, so the duration below are the minimum possible amount.

• Refresher: Face-to-face contact time of at least 6 hours
• Face-to-face: Face-to-face contact time of at least 10 hours

Performance tasks:

• Respond to the two (2) simulated scenarios as selected by your assessor to:
  • Complete two (2) JSEA/ SWMS and a Hot Work permit, identifying hazards, assessing the risks, and implementing appropriate control measures
  • Select and calibrate the gas testing equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Test and monitor the atmosphere for harmful elements according to procedures
  • Interpret record and report the results from the atmospheric testing according to Permit and procedures
  • Raise and issue a work permit and monitor work for compliance
  • Receive an end of day report and close the work permit after checking the work undertaken and the work site satisfied permit conditions.
• During the above, the candidate must:
  • Implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for gas testing
  • Speak clearly and unambiguously in the language of the worksite and work effectively with others to raise and issue a permit
• Complete the tasks in line with Federal, State/Territory regulations, confined space codes of practice, and other Australian national workplace or site procedures.

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

• Two (2) risk assessments
• Hot Work Permit

Theory assessment:

• A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

This course set is designed for both new and experienced personnel who need to perform atmospheric gas testing, conduct hazard analyses, and issue work permits in the resources and infrastructure industries. It is essential for a wide range of roles, including safety officers, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers, transport personnel, and safety observers or stand-by personnel.

The course also applies to individuals working independently or as part of a team to conduct hazard analyses, which may be a critical part of broader processes like identifying necessary permits for specific work activities. Participants will gain an understanding of the permit system, including the limitations and appropriate application of each permit, and will learn how to issue all required permits. In some organisations, these permits may be referred to as ‘clearances.’

In addition, this course is vital for individuals who need to perform gas testing of an atmosphere before entering a potentially hazardous area or workspace. These environments may be unpredictable, high-pressure, and dangerous. The course covers the skills needed to safely use electronic testing equipment, interpret gas readings, and take appropriate actions based on the results to ensure the safety of the workspace.
